Career:

  • 1981 became the European Cadet Champion and was elected as the best center in the championship
  • 1982 became the World champion with USSR national team
  • In 1981-1989 played in Kaunas ZALGIRIS team (three times became USSR champion in 1985, 1986, 1987)
  • 1981 debut in USSR championship with Kaunas ZALGIRIS team
  • 1982 became the World champion with the SSRS national team
  • 1983 3rd place at the European Championship
  • 1984 and 1985 Arvydas Sabonis was recognized as the best basketball player of the Year
  • 1985 became the European champion with USSR national team in Stuttgart. He was elected as the best player tournament
  • 1985 became World Students champion
  • In the 1985 NBA Draft he was a fourth round draft pick of the Atlanta Hawks but this was later nullified because of his age (he was under 21).
  • 1986  2nd place at the World championship
  • 1986 won the continental V. Jones Cup with Kaunas ZALGIRIS team in Argentina
  • In the 1986 NBA Draft he was the Portland Trail Blazers' first pick (24th overall), but again he couldn't play for them due to the political circumstances at the time - he went to the Forum Valladolid club (Spain)
  • 1988 he was elected as the best European basketball player, became an Olympic championship with USSR national team in Seoul
  • 1989 A. Sabonis scored 53 points during the match with Moscow DYNAMO team
  • 1989 3rd place at European Championship in Zagreb
  • 1989-1992 played  in Valladolid 'Forum' team (Spain)
  • In 1991 and 1992 played in All-Star game at the Spanich Cup and both times became MVP
  • 1992 3rd place at Olympic Games with Lithuanian national team in Barcelona
  • 1992 Arvydas Sabonis established the basketball school of his name
  • In 1992-1995 played for Madrid Real (Spain); became champion of Spain twice, both times  became MVP, won the Spanish King Cup,
  • 1995 became  the Euroleague champion and Final Four MVP;
  • 1993 was elected as the best European basketball player;
  • 1995 was elected as the best European basketball player,  2nd place at the European Championship with Lithuanian team in Athens,
  • 1995-2001 played in Portland Trail Blazers (NBA)
  • 1996 won Player of the Week award in the NBA on 1 April;
  • 1996 won Rookie of the Month award (NBA)
  • 1996 3rd place with the Lithuanian national team in Atlanta
  • 1997 was elected as the best European basketball player
  • 1999 played at the European basketball championship
  • 2001 A. Sabonis was awarded the highest prize of the International Olympic Committee - Olympic medal
  • 2002 returned to the Trail Blazers
  • In 2003-2004 returned to Kaunas ZALGIRIS team after 14 years and became Lithuanian champion, became the most advantageous player of Euroleague regular season, was elected to the 1st team of Euroleague
